First national Sustainable Wedding Awards launches in the UK

Each year, there are approx. 278,599 weddings in UK.

While weddings are a time of celebration, their environmental impact often fails to show the planet much love. The average wedding emits 14.5 tons of carbon dioxide – that’s more than one person’s carbon footprint for an entire year!

Many elements of a wedding are unfortunately single use, making them potentially very wasteful too.

Nobody wants to start a happy chapter of their lives thinking about their negative impact on the planet, which is why more and more suppliers across the industry are switching to more sustainable options – so their happy couples can tread lightly without overthinking it.

Michelle Miles has over two decades of experience in the weddings and event industry, so she understands the challenges that companies in the sector face. There are over 139,000 wedding businesses in the UK, and most of them are micro-businesses or SMEs.

Michelle founded the Sustainable Wedding Alliance to provide a supportive community, education, and accreditation to wedding businesses on a mission to make their industry greener.

And now, The Sustainable Wedding Alliance will champion the sector’s most sustainable suppliers, with the launch of the UK’s first ever Sustainable Wedding Awards!

The awards will recognise and reward businesses for their commitment to sustainability across 10 categories, including Sustainable Supply Chain, Food Waste Prevention Champion and Sustainable Start Up Award. Companies will also be recognised for their leadership on the journey to net zero, and how they’re embedding circular economy practices into their business model.

In addition to the 10 categories, there will be a Judge’s Choice Award awarded to a non-category winner whose business wowed the judges!

The awards are open to anyone in the UK, working in the wedding industry that has been in business for a minimum of 12 months and have a publicly available Sustainability/Environmental Policy or declaration.

Prominent figures from across the wedding industry and sustainability sector have been invited to join the judging panel. Judges include:

Imogen Read from Recycle My Wedding – the sustainable sister of the number one wedding planning and advice resource, Rock My Wedding.
